Chris Rock Hits Broadway In A New Play!

Comedy News

Word on the street has it that actor/comedian Chris Rock is about to hit Broadway!

Yep, that’s right! We hear that Rock will make his Broadway debut in Stephen Adly Guirgis’ new play titled  The Motherfucker With the Hat. (Sorry for the profanity, but is the actual title of the play.)

Anyway, we hear that Rock will be joined in the play in an ensemble cast featuring Bobby Cannavale, Elizabeth Rodriguez, Annabella Sciorra and Yul Vazquez in what is being described as “ferocious play about love and addiction, that crackles with fiery, brutal dialogue.”

The play is about a couple – Jackie (Cannavale) and Veronica (Rodriguez) – who’ve been in love with each other since they were kids, but after years of drugs and alcohol addiction, Jackie has sobered up with the help of his AA sponsor, Ralph D. (played by Chris Rock); however, Veronica, hasn’t.

Chris Rock reportedly was impressive during readings of the play over the summer, and some say his performance (not a comedic one – more of a dramatic one) will surprise the audience, and the play is expected to draw some great numbers.

Scott Rudin, who picked up a Tony last season for the Fences, and who’ll also be producing Death of a Salesman, with Philip Seymour Hoffman, and Sweet Bird of Youth with Nicole Kidman, next year, is serving as producer of the play.

The Motherfucker With the Hat opens April 11, 2011 at the Schoenfeld Theatre.
