‘Wild ‘N Out’ made its return to television after six years on Thursday, July 12. For the new season, host Nick Cannon enlisted new and unknown talent.
The 11 PM debut of the rebooted Nick Cannon Presents: Wild’N Out proved to be the highest-rated show in the 17-year history of MTV2. The improv comedy competition show pulled in a 1.3 rating among the station’s targeted 12-34 demo and 1.1 million viewers. MTV2’s previous top-rated telecast was a February episode of Guy Code that garnered a 0.6 rating.
“I want to create opportunities for new talent and that’s what we did the first time around,” he said. “The first time around it was all of my friends who I thought were hilarious,” he said in regards to Affion Crockett, Katt Williams and Kevin Hart.
This season new talent includes comedians Timothy De La Ghetto and Conceited. Cannon said, unlike the previous seasons, the new talent even has potential to become music stars.
“I’m looking forward to seeing that journey as well as breaking new talent in that sense,” he said.
In season 5, the game “Wild Style,” where both rival teams freestyle against each other, remains a component. Cannon told VIBE that rapper French Montana was a memorable guest star this season especially during that part of the show.
“I didn’t expect French Montana to be as funny as he was,” he said. “He had everybody dying.”
During the interview, Cannon also spoke about his feud with rapper Tyler The Creator. Still, Cannon showed no aggression towards Tyler or the rest of the Odd Future hip-hop collective.
“I’m a huge fan of Odd Future. I love their movement and everything that they do,” Cannon said. “I just wish they wasn’t frightened of this Wild ‘N Out thing we got going on cause then we could actually make some good entertainment.”
