Update On ‘The Arsenio Hall Show’- Is It Coming Back?

Arsenio HallOn May 30th the world heard the news that The Arsenio Hall Show would not return for a second season this fall, as it was decided by CBS Television Distribution that the ratings were not good enough for the show to come back.

“While there are many loyal fans of the show, the series did not grow its audience enough to continue,” said a CTD spokesperson in a statement. “Arsenio is a tremendous talent and we’d like to thank him for all the hard work and energy he put into the show. We’d also like to thank Tribune and all our station group partners for their support of the show.”

The show had struggled in the ratings since debuting strong last September, and despite the ratings dip there was an announcement in February by Jay Leno who appeared on the show and stated during the opening monologue with Arsenio that the show was returning. But it seems that despite that announcement, CBS later declined to rekindle the show.

The show averaged a 0.8 household rating in 56 metered markets, down 20% from its time slots last year, according to Nielsen. It had a 0.4 adult 18-49 rating, flat, and a 0.4 adult 25-54 rating, down 20%.

“When I started this adventure with CTD and Tribune, we all knew it would be a challenge,” said Hall in a statement. “I’m gratified for the year we’ve had and proud of the show we created. I’d like to thank everyone on my staff for rallying around me and striving to make the best show possible every night.”

When the show was canceled we were told by our sources that several other cable networks were looking at the show to broadcast which included BET, OWN and the E! Network. Now our sources have told us that the show is looking like it wont come back at all and that’s due to the costs of the show which executives were unable to trim down. We were also  told that the show- while it seems to be almost dead- can be revived if some costs are cut completely.

This story is still developing.

Is ‘The Arsenio Hall Show’ Coming Back To Television?

As we all know by now, The Arsenio Hall Show was canceled last week and as you can imagine, the news shook the late night industry. According to CBS Television Distribution, which produces the show, they felt that they had to pull the plug because of declining ratings despite stating a month ago that the show would be renewed.

Well, over the weekend we started to hear some news that surprised us; our sources stated that The Arsenio Hall Show was being courted by several networks, and that there may be an offer soon for the show to be picked up.

So, over the weekend we stated via a tweet the news and this morning our sources confirmed to us that BET, OWN, E! and maybe one other network were having serious conversations about the show. The initial concerns are the budget of the show and if it would be possible for it to be cut down so they could move forward.

Several of our calls placed to the networks were either not returned or denied, but our sources told us that there are  serious discussions taking place.

As of this writing, no official word has been released, but it looks like The Arsenio Hall Show is not dead after all.

‘Arsenio Hall Show’ Canceled After 1 Season!

The Arsenio Hall Show will not return for a second season this fall, CBS Television Distribution confirmed this afternoon.

The rookie latenight talk show from CTD and Tribune had struggled in the ratings since debuting strong last September. Its weakening performance led to time slot downgrades, notably on Tribune’s WPIX New York, where it was shifted from 11 p.m. to 11:30 p.m.

In the just-concluded May sweep, the show averaged a 0.8 household rating in 56 metered markets, down 20% from its time slots last year, according to Nielsen.

In February, former Tonight Show host Jay Leno appeared on Arsenio to announce that the show had been renewed. But ratings remained weak in most markets.

“Everyone had hopes that it would turn itself around,” says a syndication executive. “But, I think, when Tribune moved it in New York it meant they’re concerned about the show.”

‘The Arsenio Hall Show’ Officially Renewed For Season 2!

Jay Leno stopped by for tonight’s taping to surprise Arsenio Hall with the announcement that CBS Television Distribution renewed The Arsenio Hall Show for a second season. (The show had a two-year deal with the stations led by Tribune Broadcasting, so the pickup of the syndicated late-night talker not a shocker). It marks Leno’s first TV appearance since departing The Tonight Show on February 7.

Arsenio debuted September 9. “Actually, on the second season, I’m gonna be hosting — they didn’t tell you that part,” Leno joked after sneaking up on his former rival.
